SB 1300 – Disruption; Educational Institutions; Concealed Weapon

Sponsored by Sen. Rogers, this bill would bar the governing body of any university, college, or community college from prohibiting the lawful transportation or storage of a firearm or the possession of a concealed weapon by a concealed weapon permit holder.

The Arizona Board of Regents currently prohibits, with certain exceptions, the use, possession, display, or storage of any weapon on university property. And for good reason: Campuses are by their very nature places where young people come to develop into mature adults. Campuses are also places where
we typically find higher rates of behavioral disorders, mental illness, suicide, and drug and alcohol use.

Universities, colleges, and community colleges are in the best position to assess the risks and benefits presented by guns on their campuses.
This bill is opposed by the Northern Arizona University, Arizona Community College Coordinating Council, Arizona Public Health Association, Arizona Academy of Pediatrics, and even the Arizona Chamber of Commerce, among many other organizations and individuals who are concerned about the safety and welfare of our students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors.
